It seems like every day we find press releases about new spirits about to hit the market. Before our official reviews for these bottles arrive, we wanted to give you a sneak peak about what’s coming soon to stores near you. Here’s the New Booze News for the week of May 15th, 2017!
BUFFALO TRACE EXPERIMENTAL COLLECTION
This bourbon from Buffalo Trace’s Experiential Collection is made from a six-grain mashbill: corn, buckwheat, brown rice, sorghum, wheat, and rice. Eight barrels were filled for this release with the whiskey resting for 7 years and 1 month before bottling. The whiskey is organic as all the grains used are certified organic. The whiskey is sold at 90 proof and, as is the case with all of the Experimental Collection whiskeys, is available in a 375ml sized bottle. Expected retail price $46.
KILCHOMAN SINGLE MALTS
This bottling marks the 6th edition of the Loch Gorm whiskies, a single malt which ages exclusively in Oloroso sherry butts. The Islay whisky was filled in 2009 and after maturation was bottled at 46% ABV. It is non chill-filtered and has no color added.
Kilchoman Loch Gorm 2017
Released May 2017, this is the seventh edition of 100% Islay Malt from Kilchoman. As is the case with all of these bottlings, the barley is grown on Islay and is malted at the distillery. The peat level is slightly lower than the rest of their portfolio. The whisky is aged in a combination of first-fill and refill ex-bourbon barrels from Buffalo Trace. The barrels were filled in 2010 and bottled in 2017. The single malt is sold at 50% ABV.
REBEL YELL WHISKEYS
The 2017 batch of Rebel Yell’s 10 Year Single Barrel Bourbon will be available beginning in May. This wheated-bourbon first launched in 2016 and will be available in a limited supply of 2,000 cases for the US. The 10-year bottling comes in at 100-proof and, as they are single barrel whiskeys, expect slight flavor variations to occur.
Rebel Yell 10 Year Single Barrel
Also in Rebel Yell news, their Rebel Yell Small Batch Rye will be available in 1-liter sized bottles in addition to the standard 750ml size.
ATLANTICO RUM GETS A FRESH LOOK
The Atlantico Rum portfolio from the Dominican Republic has updated their packaging. Platino, Reserva, and Gran Reserva (formerly Private Cask) have new bottle and label designs influenced by Caribbean ceramic tiles and passport stamps. The bottles list raw materials (molasses and fresh cane juice) as well as types of barrels used and tasting notes. Expect to see these new bottles replace what is on shelves beginning May 2017. The rum portfolio retails in the US, Canada, Mexico, Australia, Europe, and the Caribbean.
