New Booze News: Stranahan’s Sherry Cask, Woodford, Hennessy Master’s Blender’s Collection N°2 & More!

We’ve got news on a trio of American whiskey releases, all with wine finishes, including the new Stranahan’s Sherry Cask. Ardbeg has something special exclusively for its committee members. If you’re a fan of rye whiskeys with some age on them, you’ll be wanting to add the latest Lock Stock and Barrel release to your wish lists. But, if cognac is more your speed, you’ll be pleased to hear about Hennessy’s second Master Blender’s release. Here’s the booze news for the week of October 16, 2017!

USA

Stranahan’s Sherry Cask

Stranahan’s has added a fourth bottling to its line up. Sherry Cask consists of 100% malted barley aged for four years in new, charred American oak. This American single malt whiskey finishes its maturation in former oloroso sherry barrels. Bottled at 47% ABV, it is available November 2017. Suggested retail price $79.99.

Yellowstone Kentucky Straight Bourbon Finished in Charred Wine Casks (2017 Limited Edition)

This limited edition bottling is comprised by blending three Kentucky straight bourbon whiskeys: Seven year-old bourbon, twelve year-old bourbon, and four year-old bourbon distilled at Limestone Branch Distillery. After blending, this whiskey finished its maturation in toasted, then lightly-charred wine casks. Bottled at 101 proof (50.5% ABV). Between “7,000 and 8,000 bottles” are available beginning October 2017. Suggested retail price $99.99.

Woodford Reserve French Oak Cask Finished Rye

This is the third and final release in the trilogy of rye offerings and the seventh overall Distillery Release bottling from Woodford Reserve. This limited edition series features innovative techniques and experimentation in whiskey making. This French Oak Cask Finished Rye highlights a rye mash distillate used in their Master’s Selection Aged Cask Rye offering. Made from 100% rye and aged in used American oak, it finishes its maturation in French oak barrels which held red wine. Bottled at 86.4 proof, this comes in 375ml sized bottles. Available at the distillery and in select Kentucky retailers. Suggested retail price $49.99.

CANADA

Lock Stock & Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey 18 Year

This is the third and oldest release thus far of Lock Stock & Barrel Straight Rye Whiskey following the 13-year-old and 16-year-old bottlings. Like those releases, it is 100% rye whiskey distilled at Canada’s Alberta Distillery. It is a “robust cut”, unfiltered after aging for 18 years in new, charred American oak. Bottled at 109 proof. Available beginning late fall 2017 with a suggested retail price of $229.99.

SCOTLAND

Ardbeg Twenty Something 23 Year

This limited edition single malt bottling hails from a time when Ardbeg’s future was uncertain. It was created by marrying whiskies that aged in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks for at least 23 years. Bottled at 46.3% ABV, it will be exclusively available to Ardbeg Committee Members beginning November 2, 2017 for £430 ($565).

FRANCE

Hennessy Master Blender’s Selection N° 2

Former master blender Yann Fillioux created this limited edition bottling. It consists of eaux-de-vies aged at least ten years, mostly from the Petite Champagne area. For eighteen months it aged in young, coarse-grain French oak barrels before finishing its maturation in older barrels. Available only in the US, it hits shelves in late October 2017. Bottled at cask strength of 43% ABV it has a suggested retail price of $90.
