There is no job on planet earth so demanding as motherhood. Which is why Moms have good reason to enjoy a good, stiff drink every once in awhile. Landing on that one perfect drink to honor the matriarch is more challenging than you might suspect. But in building the ideal Mother’s Day drink there’s one ingredient, at least, that seems indispensable: bubbly. Since the point of the day is to celebrate, your beverages best incorporate some sparkling wine in their cocktails. At WP24, Wolfgang Puck’s Asian-inspired penthouse lounge in downtown LA, mom’s mixological masterpiece awaits.

AN ASIAN-FRENCH HYBRID
When you envision Mother’s Day meals, brunch fare likely emerges at the forefront (Eggs Benedict, Bacon Frittatas, perhaps). But consider this: Thai food. “In Thailand they also celebrate Mother’s Day,” explains Kiersten Thomsen, behind the stick at WP24. “Since all of our drinks involve some Asian influence, I decided to use Thai basil in our Mother’s Day special — the Strawberry Blossom.” The exotic herb, muddled into the cocktail, imbues the liquid with enchanting aromatics. They mingle effortlessly against the floral undertones of St. Germain, and a floater of Nino Franco Prosecco. Served in a champagne flute these elements are sweetened by muddled organic strawberries, funneling brightly into the nose.
Of course flowers are an integral part of Sunday’s holiday, but for Thomsen, the addition of elderflower liqueur was a bit of a personal touch. “Growing up, my mother always told me that French was a language I needed to learn, so the St. Germain makes me think of her.” The elderflowers at its base are also harvested in France once a year, echoing the annual celebration that is Mother’s Day.
The Strawberry Blossom is light, effervescent, and optimized for day-drinking. A recipe like this makes sense at a bar where lychee martinis are a top-seller. But for moms that need a bit more oomph to their afternoon, Thomsen welcomes a shot of Hendrick’s Gin into the fold. “It has rose and cucumber elements that work perfectly,” she explains. Since we know how tough your mom must have been to raise you, we present the strengthened variation below.
