We’re coming up on the second Sunday of May, a day where many around the world celebrate moms and motherhood. Of course it’s tough to celebrate anything these days. But birthdays, graduations and holidays keep coming so we must carry on and do our best. This year it’s especially important to recognize those who have the hardest job in the world. Anyone who can juggle working from home, teaching the little ones, and still finding time to pull together dinner deserves a heralding. And for us grown adults, anyone who raised us deserves a medal. Perhaps we can’t be there to celebrate in person this year, but thanks to shops offering shipping or delivery we can still send a gift to the moms in our lives. With this in mind, we offer up a few Mother’s Day spirit recommendations.
Fans of Hendrick’s now-classic gin know it’s made with cucumber and rose petals, but Midsummer Solstice takes the floral notes a step further. Crafted by Hendrick’s master distiller Lesley Gracie, Midsummer Solstice is a limited edition release that’s been “infused with natural floral essences”. With this Mother’s Day spirit, try a Mimosa or a Tom Collins!
Jane Walker by Johnnie Walker is a blended malt crafted by master blender Emma Walker. Launched by Diageo in spring 2020, this is one of two limited edition whiskies in its new Craftswomen Series—celebrating the women who make the brand’s spirits. This blended malt is aged for 10 years with Cardhu being the heart of the blend.
If you’re looking for cocktail inspirations, Johnnie Walker’s Instagram account has a Kitchen Sink Drinks story featuring Jane Walker. Kitchen Sink Drinks is a virtual program tapping local bartenders to create custom drink recipes featuring unexpected ingredients submitted by people at home. For every ingredient submission tagging @johnniewalkerus, #TipsFromHome and #DiageoDonation, Johnnie Walker will donate $1 up to $1 million to hospitality relief.
Katia Espírito Santo is one of Brazil’s only female cachaça distillers. She oversees a sustainable distillation process that begins with sugarcane grown without pesticides. First, the sugarcane is hand-harvested at her farm Fazenda da Quinta in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The cane is then crushed by a spring-fed water wheel and the fermented juice is distilled in copper pot stills. Avuá Cachaça Prata rests in stainless steel tanks for six months before being hand-bottled.
Absolut Juice Pear & Elderflower Edition is the third release in the brand’s Juice line up following Absolut Juice Apple and Absolut Juice Strawberry. The flavored vodka is made with no artificial flavors or synthetic colors. Additionally, each bottle contains 5% real juice in its composition. This Mother’s Day spirit can work with club soda, but try with lemonade or cider to pump up the fruit.
Ki No Bi, meaning “the beauty of the seasons” is a dry-style gin from Japan’s first dedicated gin distillery. Master Distiller Alex Davies of the Kyoto Distillery uses a spirit base distilled from rice. Then he adds botanicals like yellow yuzu, hinoki (cypress) wood chips, bamboo, gyokuro tea and green sanshō (Japanese peppercorn) berries that are designated into the following categories: base, citrus, tea, herbal, spice and floral.
Each botanical category is steeped into the rice spirit, which is then individually distilled before blending together. It is brought to proof using water from Fushimi, known for its purity. This Mother’s Day spirit recommendation is bottled at 45.7% ABV.
This cognac is produced entirely from ugni blanc grapes grown in the premier cru of Grand Champagne. It matured in French oak barrels, 20% of which were ex-Sauternes casks in a humid cellar. The name 10 Générations is a tribute to the 10 generations of the Ferrand family that have passed down their knowledge of viticulture and distillation through the generations.
Mademoiselle Henriette, the last descendant of the main branch of the Ferrands, was the guardian of the family history. She entrusted these memories to Alexandre Gabriel, founder of Maison Ferrand, who crafted the cognac.
The recipe this classic liqueur is based on has been kept in the family for many generations. It’s made by steeping wild English sloe berries with Hayman’s London Dry Gin for months, before the addition of sweetener. Additional botanicals include juniper, coriander, lemon & orange peel, angelica root, cinnamon, cassia bark, orris root, licorice, and nutmeg.
Of course a Sloe Gin Fizz is always a winner, but a Sloe Royale is even better. Just add one ounce of Hayman’s Sloe Gin in a Champagne glass and top with Champagne. Cheers, Mom!
